You may be surprised that only around half of the 14 billion drink containers we use each year in Australia are recycled. The rest are either thrown away as litter or end up in landfill!

Environment Ministers will soon decide on how stop these billions of beverage containers being landfilled or littered. A container deposit system is a proven way to reduce this waste - it's been operating successfully in South Australia for 30 years and has made the state a leader with a recycling rate of 83%, double the national average. For more background, here's a link to a really informative ABC 7.30 Report on the issues.

What can you do?

  • Write an e-letter to your local MP via Do Gooder
  • Hand write a letter to your local MPsee sample here
  • Send an online letter to your State Premier saying you want a 10c refundable deposit on all beverage containers (plastic, glass bottles and aluminum cans) to reduce litter and increase recycling Here's the link to send a letter to your...

The holidays are nearly over (yes it's true ): It’s that time where you need to start thinking about what you need for back to school or education. But wait - don't rush out to the nearest big store to load up with the cheapest (and nastiest) supplies you can find.

What your school stationery and supplies are made of matters. You might only use school stationery for a year or so, but some of the materials it can be made from last a lot longer than that - usually in landfill!

  • Got a pencil case full of cheap plastic pens? Small things can have big impacts. Every year over 10 billion plastic pens worldwide are thrown out and end up in landfill.  Why add to the waste - use recycled paper pens, biodegradable cornstarch pens and other alternatives instead.
  • Materials such as PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) in folders, ring binders, erasers and pencil cases pose great environmental and health hazards from manufacture to disposal. Why take the risk - there are better alternatives:...

What is seeded vegie paper? Recycled Handmade Paper containing seeds of vegetables. In this case paper with carrot seeds and paper with lettuce seeds. Available in A4 and A5 sizes, in packs of 20 sheets. Can be printed for promotions, invitations etc. Once the message has been read, the receiver can plant the paper and watch it grow!

Some of the many seeds in the paper will germinate under the right conditions and the resulting carrot or lettuce seedlings can be planted in the garden as a constant reminder of the sender of the paper.

Carrots are one of the easiest vegies to grow. They don't take up much space, so even if you have only a small patch of sunny ground available, you can get a small crop of carrots growing. Carrots (Daucus carota ssp. sativus) grow better if planted as seed: you need to prepare the soil though, as carrots need deep, well-drained soil. Best time for planting is from August to March in temperate climes. Carrots take about 3 weeks to show themselves...

Recycled Handmade Paper containing seeds of the herb Oregano. Available in A4 and A5 sizes, in packs of 20 sheets. Seeded Paper can be printed for promotions, invitations etc. Once the message has been read, the receiver can plant the paper and watch it grow!

Some of the many seeds in the paper will germinate under the right conditions and the resulting herb seedlings can be planted in the garden as a constant reminder of the sender of the paper.

Also known as wild marjoram, but actually coming from a genus of the mint family, Oregano is a popular, aromatic Mediterranean herb used to season all types of dishes, especially recipes which include or are based on tomatoes.

It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and bears attractive purplish flowers in summer. Plants tend to be quite variable when grown from seed. Oregano is a perennial herb, and grows from 20 to 80 cm tall. Leaves are green to grey-green in colour and may be hairy or smooth.

Did you know that hemp twine, cord and rope has been made and used by people for at least the last 10,000 years? One of the first plants ever cultivated, hemp proved to be easy to grow, versatile, and ideal for braiding into strong durable cords and rope. Indeed seafarers from ancient times relied on hemp ropes for the sea-worthiness, good handling, and security of their sails and ships.

Where does it come from? Hemp twine is made from the Cannabis sativa...
